Description
Apollo 6 ascent (third of 3 images). Interstage section that connected the first and second stages of Apollo 6's Saturn V rocket falls away from the second stage. The first stage had burned for 148 seconds after its launch on 4 April 1968. The unmanned Apollo 6 was the second mission to be launched by a Saturn V, the design that would take people to the Moon. Apollo 6 climbed to 367 kilometres altitude and returned over 10 hours later. Despite problems with the rocket's propulsion systems, this was the last unmanned test launch before the manned Apollo 7 mission in October 1968. There were 16 unmanned Apollo test missions during 1960-68. (See also S370/114 & 115).
